Description
The gold leaf electroscope is a classic scientific instrument used to detect the presence and magnitude of electric charge on a body. It features a metal disc or ball at the top connected to a vertical metal rod that extends into a transparent, protective glass chamber. At the base of this rod, a delicate strip of gold leaf is attached; when a charged object is brought near the top disc, the like charges travel down the rod and cause the gold leaf to repel from the stationary metal support, indicating the strength of the static charge via its angle of deflection.
